By the Numbers
Brigade is an outside-writer album at heart. The signature hit 'All I Wanna Do Is Make Love to You' was written entirely by Robert John 'Mutt' Lange, not by anyone in the band, and it was originally pitched to Don Henley before Heart reworked it from a female point of view for Ann Wilson to sing. Around it, the credits read like a who's-who of professional hitmakers: Diane Warren wrote 'I Didn't Want to Need You' and 'Cruel Nights,' Holly Knight and Albert Hammond supplied two songs, and Tom Kelly with Billy Steinberg wrote another. Ann and Nancy Wilson still co-write several tracks, often with longtime collaborator Sue Ennis, and Sammy Hagar co-wrote 'The Night' and 'Fallen from Grace' with drummer Denny Carmassi. Brigade is the tenth studio album by American rock band Heart, released on March 26, 1990, by Capitol Records. Produced by Richie Zito, it continued the polished arena-rock direction of the band's late-1980s comeback while leaning heavily on outside songwriters and hired hitmakers. The lead single 'All I Wanna Do Is Make Love to You,' written entirely by Robert John 'Mutt' Lange, reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and became one of the band's biggest hits. Diane Warren, Holly Knight, Albert Hammond, Tom Kelly, and Billy Steinberg all contributed songs, and Sammy Hagar co-wrote two tracks with drummer Denny Carmassi, so the Wilson sisters' own writing sits alongside a deep bench of professional composers. Ann Wilson handled most lead vocals, backed by Nancy Wilson, Howard Leese, Mark Andes, and Carmassi, and the record went double platinum in the United States while reaching the top three in several countries.
