By the Numbers
Fanatic is a fully co-written record: every track carries the same three names, Ann Wilson, Nancy Wilson, and producer Ben Mink, who wrote and built the album together as a trio. The composer column lists the Wilson sisters under their legal names, Ann Dustin Wilson and Nancy Lamoureux Wilson, alongside Ben Mink. There are no covers on the standard edition and no outside writers, so the authorship is uniform across all ten songs. Mink also produced the entire album and played the bulk of its instrumental layers, making him the third creative pillar next to the Wilsons.
Fanatic is the fifteenth studio album by the American rock band Heart, released on October 2, 2012 through Legacy Recordings. It reunited Ann and Nancy Wilson with producer and multi-instrumentalist Ben Mink, who had helmed their 2010 album Red Velvet Car, and the three co-wrote every song on the record together. The album leans into a heavier, hard-rock attack while keeping room for the folk and acoustic textures Heart is known for, with Mink layering guitar, violin, viola, banjo, mandolin, and keyboards across the tracks. Ann Wilson handles lead vocals throughout, Nancy Wilson plays guitar and mandolin, and the core band is rounded out by Ric Markmann on bass and Ben Smith on drums. Sarah McLachlan guests on the ballad 'Walkin' Good.' The record debuted at number 24 on the Billboard 200 and reached number 12 on the Top Rock Albums chart, with 'Fanatic' and 'Dear Old America' worked as its rock-radio singles.
