Data Insight

Dog & Butterfly is a Wilson-sisters record at heart, but the writing credits show how collaborative Heart was in this era. Every song is credited to Ann Wilson and Nancy Wilson with keyboardist and longtime collaborator Sue Ennis, who co-wrote all eight tracks. Guitarist Roger Fisher shares credit on the two heaviest songs, the opener 'Cook with Fire' and the closing epic 'Mistral Wind,' and guitarist Howard Leese also earns a credit on 'Cook with Fire.' In the composer column the Wilsons appear under their legal names, Ann Dustin Wilson and Nancy Lamoureux Wilson, while Ennis, Fisher, and Leese are credited as written. Ann Wilson sings lead across the album.

Dog & Butterfly is the fourth studio album by the American rock band Heart, released in October 1978 on Portrait Records and produced by Mike Flicker with the band and Michael Fisher. The record is split into two conceptual sides, a harder-rocking 'Dog' side and a softer, more acoustic 'Butterfly' side, a structure that captures the two poles of Heart's sound in one release. Ann Wilson handles lead vocals throughout, with sister Nancy Wilson on acoustic guitar and harmony, and the writing is a group effort built around the Wilsons, keyboardist Sue Ennis, and guitarist Roger Fisher. It produced two Billboard Hot 100 hits, the driving 'Straight On' at number 15 and the reflective title track at number 34, and reached number 17 on the Billboard 200. The album was certified 2x Platinum by the RIAA and remains one of the band's most enduring late-1970s records.
