Data Insight

Bad Animals is a study in outside authorship. Heart's two biggest hits here were both written entirely by professional songwriters: 'Alone' came from Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly, who had originally cut it with their own project I-Ten before Heart turned it into a number-one smash, and 'Who Will You Run To' was written by Diane Warren. Other tracks brought in Holly Knight, Lisa Dal Bello, Steve Kipner, Peter Beckett, Duane Hitchings, and Sue Shifrin. Ann and Nancy Wilson's own pens appear mostly on the back half, on the band-written title track and the Sue Ennis co-writes 'Easy Target' and 'RSVP,' so the songs that sold the record were largely not the band's own.

Bad Animals is the ninth studio album by Heart, released in 1987 on Capitol Records as the follow-up to their multi-platinum 1985 comeback. Produced by Ron Nevison, it doubled down on the polished, radio-ready arena rock that had rebuilt the band's career, leaning heavily on outside songwriters and session musicians. The album gave Heart their biggest single with 'Alone,' a number-one Billboard Hot 100 hit written by the professional team of Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly. Diane Warren supplied the follow-up hit 'Who Will You Run To,' while the Wilson sisters wrote or co-wrote the album's deeper cuts, including the title track and the closing pair 'Easy Target' and 'RSVP.' It peaked at number two on the Billboard 200 and was certified triple platinum by the RIAA, cementing the late-1980s peak of Heart's commercial success.
