Magazine's authorship sits mostly with Ann and Nancy Wilson, who wrote the five original songs, with 'Here Song' credited to Ann alone. The rest are covers: Badfinger's 'Without You' by Pete Ham and Tom Evans, plus two live tracks, Peter Chatman's 'Mother Earth Blues' and Bias Boshell's 'I've Got the Music in Me.' The album is defined by its legal fight as much as its writing. Mushroom Records released an unauthorized 1977 mix built from incomplete tapes without the band, Heart blocked it by injunction, and a settlement compelled the group to finish the record properly. Mike Flicker produced the authorized 1978 version, which restored the mix Mushroom had made without the band and added Ann Wilson's re-recorded 1978 lead vocals.

Magazine is a studio album by the American rock band Heart, tied to one of the most contested releases in the band's history. It grew out of sessions for what was meant to be Heart's second album on Mushroom Records, but the band's relationship with the label collapsed after a December 1976 Rolling Stone ad, styled like a tabloid front page, that pictured Ann and Nancy Wilson bare-shouldered with suggestive copy implying the sisters were lovers. When Mushroom refused to raise the band's royalty rate, Heart argued the label had breached its contract by failing to secure producer Mike Flicker and signed with Portrait Records instead. In spring 1977 Mushroom struck back by pressing an unauthorized version of Magazine, assembled from unfinished studio takes and live recordings and remixed with no band members present; Heart won a court injunction and roughly 50,000 copies were pulled and mostly destroyed. A settlement then forced the band to complete the record, so in March 1978 Ann Wilson re-cut lead vocals and the group re-mixed and re-edited the tracks for an authorized release that April, giving the album its US top-twenty run and the hit single 'Heartless.'

Frequently Asked Questions Magazine

Who wrote the songs on Heart's Magazine?
Ann Wilson and Nancy Wilson wrote the five original songs, and Ann wrote 'Here Song' on her own. Three tracks are covers: 'Without You' by Pete Ham and Tom Evans, 'Mother Earth Blues' by Peter Chatman, and 'I've Got the Music in Me' by Bias Boshell.
Why was Magazine a contested album?
Heart fell out with Mushroom Records after a 1976 Rolling Stone ad and left for Portrait Records. Mushroom retaliated by releasing an unauthorized 1977 version of Magazine, built from unfinished studio takes and live tracks and remixed without any band members present.
How did the lawsuit end?
Heart won a court injunction that stopped the 1977 release, and about 50,000 copies were recalled and mostly destroyed. A settlement then required the band to complete the record, leading to the authorized 1978 version.
What is the difference between the 1977 and 1978 versions?
The 1977 Mushroom pressing used incomplete recordings mixed without the band. For the authorized 1978 release, Ann Wilson re-recorded lead vocals in March 1978, a synthesizer solo on 'Just the Wine' was replaced with flute, and the live medley was re-edited.
Who produced Magazine?
Mike Flicker produced the authorized 1978 version, the same producer whose absence Heart cited as Mushroom's breach of contract. The disputed 1977 mix was assembled without the band's involvement.
Did 'Heartless' chart as a single?
Yes. Released in March 1978, 'Heartless,' written by Ann and Nancy Wilson, reached number 24 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number 18 on Canada's RPM singles chart.
How well did the album sell?
Magazine reached number 17 on the US Billboard 200 and was certified Platinum by the RIAA in the United States and Platinum by Music Canada.
