Data Insight

Passionworks keeps Heart's writing centered on Ann Wilson, Nancy Wilson, and Sue Ennis, the core team behind the band's early records, but it is also where outside names start to appear. The full band shares the credit on the rockers 'How Can I Refuse?' and 'Blue Guitar,' producer Keith Olsen co-wrote 'Heavy Heart,' and the second single 'Allies' came entirely from Journey's Jonathan Cain. Nancy Wilson wrote 'Love Mistake' on her own, and Ann Wilson carried several tracks with Ennis alone. On the two-Wilson songs the legal-name composer credits list Ann Dustin Wilson and Nancy Lamoureux Wilson.

Passionworks is the seventh studio album by Heart, released in August 1983 on Epic Records and the last record the band made for the label before its 1985 comeback on Capitol. It arrived after a period of turnover: bassist Steve Fossen and drummer Michael Derosier were gone, replaced by Mark Andes on bass and Denny Carmassi on drums, giving the rhythm section a harder, cleaner attack. Keith Olsen produced, steering Ann and Nancy Wilson away from the folk-tinged hard rock of their Mushroom-era records and toward a polished mainstream rock sound. Ann Wilson sang lead across the album, with the Wilsons and longtime collaborator Sue Ennis handling most of the writing while a few outside hands entered the credits for the first time. The lead single 'How Can I Refuse?' topped the Mainstream Rock chart and reached number 44 on the Hot 100, and 'Allies,' written by Journey's Jonathan Cain, became the second single. Commercially it stalled against the band's earlier platinum peak, and it closed the Epic chapter before the self-titled Capitol album returned Heart to the top.
