Rattle and Hum Songwriting Credits by U2

The album's own sleeve line is music by U2, lyrics by Bono, and it only covers eleven of the seventeen tracks. Four songs carry no U2 writing credit at all: "Helter Skelter" is Lennon and McCartney, "All Along the Watchtower" is Bob Dylan, "Freedom for My People" is Sterling Magee with Bobby Robinson and Macie Mabins, and the 43 seconds of "The Star Spangled Banner" is John Stafford Smith's 18th-century tune played by Jimi Hendrix, lifted off the Woodstock soundtrack and pushed through U2's PA. Two more tracks split the credit rather than hand it over. Dylan co-wrote the words to "Love Rescue Me", and the Edge, not Bono, wrote the lyric to "Van Diemen's Land". Read the album as a U2 record start to finish and you hand the band six songs they did not write on their own.
