Songs of Surrender Songwriting Credits by U2

Nothing on this record was written from scratch, so the authorship question runs differently than it does on a normal U2 album. The copyrights already existed, which is why the only outside music writers are the ones who were there the first time: Brian Burton on "Ordinary Love", the song U2 wrote for the 2013 Mandela film, and Alana, Danielle and Este Haim with Ariel Rechtshaid on "Lights of Home" from Songs of Experience. Where the re-recording does show up is the lyric line. The album's own credit block gives words to Bono and the Edge rather than Bono alone, because the Edge sketched vocal ideas before Bono sang them and Bono then rewrote a good deal of what he was handed; 14 of the 40 tracks fall back to Bono on his own. Music stays a four-way U2 credit across all 40, and it reflects the rewritten versions rather than the originals. The performing credit is the part that is genuinely new. The Edge plays most of what you hear and produced the record, and he keeps his own demo vocal on "Stories for Boys", "Desire", "Two Hearts Beat as One" and "Peace on Earth" because Bono liked the guide takes enough to leave them alone.
