By the Numbers
The booklet keeps U2's standing arrangement: Bono writes every lyric, the four members share the music. On this record that split describes something real rather than a formality, because the songs were found in jam sessions instead of brought in as demos, so a four-way music credit is a literal account of who was in the room. The lyrics pull the opposite way. Bono was writing about the breakdown of the Edge's marriage and about becoming a father, which makes the most private words on any U2 album sit on top of parts the band argued its way into. Lanois and Eno reshaped the sound without taking a writing credit, so the producer line moves from track to track while the songwriting line never changes.
U2's seventh studio album, started at Hansa Studios in Berlin in October 1990 and finished in Dublin the following year. Daniel Lanois ran the sessions with Brian Eno dropping in for a week at a time to strip out anything that sounded too much like U2. The band pushed distortion, dance beats and industrial percussion into a sound they had built on chiming guitars, and called the result the sound of four men chopping down The Joshua Tree.
