No Line on the Horizon Songwriting Credits by U2

The credit line on this record is the thing to read closely. Where most U2 albums say music by U2 and lyrics by Bono, the sleeve here reads music by U2, Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois, which makes the two producers legal co-authors of six songs outright: the title track, "Magnificent", "Moment of Surrender", "Unknown Caller", "Fez - Being Born" and "Cedars of Lebanon". Four songs pull back to the band alone. "I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight", "Get On Your Boots", "Stand Up Comedy" and "Breathe" carry a music by U2 override, and those are also the four that Steve Lillywhite either produced or worked over hardest. "White as Snow" is a third case again: the melody is a traditional one, so the writing credit goes to the arrangement, by the band with Eno and Lanois. Lyrics move too. Bono wrote alone on most of it, The Edge joins him on "Magnificent", and "Unknown Caller" and "White as Snow" credit the whole room. Anyone assigning this album to four Irishmen is missing two names that the copyright itself carries.
