By the Numbers
Cookin' with the Miracles was the group's second album, recorded at Hitsville USA in Detroit and RCA Studios in Chicago. Berry Gordy and Smokey Robinson co-wrote most of the material, and the album featured the complete six-member lineup: Smokey Robinson, Bobby Rogers, Claudette Rogers Robinson, Pete Moore, Ronnie White, and Marv Tarplin. Three singles charted on the Billboard Hot 100: "Ain't It Baby" (#49), "Everybody's Gotta Pay Some Dues" (#52), and "Broken Hearted" (#97). The track "That's The Way I Feel" later appeared on the soundtrack of the 1964 film Nothing But a Man.
Cookin' with the Miracles is the second studio album by Smokey Robinson and The Miracles, released in 1962 on Tamla Records. The album is anchored by 'You've Really Got a Hold on Me,' one of Robinson's most enduring compositions, a slow, aching ballad that became a Motown standard and was covered by The Beatles on their 1963 album With the Beatles, cementing Robinson's reputation as a songwriter's songwriter across the Atlantic. Smokey Robinson wrote the bulk of the album's material, continuing the self-penned approach established on the debut. The record shows Robinson and the group refining their blend of doo-wop vocal interplay with emergent soul production, just as Berry Gordy's Motown operation was beginning to gain national traction. 'What's So Good About Goodbye' further demonstrated Robinson's ability to turn heartache into pop elegance.
