By the Numbers
Smokey is the debut solo studio album by Smokey Robinson, released in 1973 on Tamla Records, his first album as a solo artist after leaving The Miracles, the group he had founded and led for nearly two decades. The album produced 'Sweet Harmony,' a warm and graceful ballad co-written with Marvin Tarplin, Robinson's longtime guitar collaborator, which became a Top 5 R&B hit and established that his voice and songwriting could carry an entire record without the Miracles' vocal ensemble. 'Baby Come Close' further demonstrated Robinson's solo confidence, delivering a slow-burn romantic soul track that charted well on R&B radio. The album was largely self-written and self-produced, continuing Robinson's complete-artist authorship model in a new, more intimate solo context. Smokey set the template for the smooth, introspective soul sound that Robinson would refine throughout the 1970s.
