Being with You was Smokey Robinson's most commercially successful solo album. Produced by George Tobin, the album's title track reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100, #1 on the Cash Box Top 100, #1 on the R&B chart for five consecutive weeks, and #1 on the UK Singles Chart for two weeks. The album received RIAA Gold certification and sold approximately 900,000 copies in the US. It was one of the few Smokey Robinson solo albums released in CD format. Backing vocals were provided by Claudette Robinson, Smokey's first wife and a founding member of the Miracles.
Being with You is the fifth solo studio album by Smokey Robinson, released in February 1981 on Tamla/Motown and produced by Smokey Robinson and George Tobin. The album was Robinson's greatest commercial success as a solo artist, driven by the title track, a lush, tender ballad that reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and became his first pop chart-topper in fifteen years. The song's warm arrangement and Robinson's still-extraordinary falsetto demonstrated that his voice remained one of pop music's most distinctive and beloved instruments well into the 1980s. The album reached the top five on the Billboard 200 and demonstrated that Robinson's artistry transcended the era-specific concerns of contemporary R&B.
