Make It Happen is one of the most underrated Miracles albums, earning 4.5 stars from AllMusic. Produced by Smokey Robinson, Henry Cosby, Brian Holland, and Lamont Dozier, it produced "The Love I Saw in You Was Just a Mirage" (#20 Hot 100). But the album's defining track is "The Tears of a Clown," recorded here in 1967 but not released as a single until 1970, when Motown issued it first in the UK. It reached #1 on both the Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles Chart and became one of Smokey Robinson's most celebrated songs, a song that sat unreleased for three years before its commercial power was recognized.
Make It Happen is the tenth studio album by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, released in April 1967 on Tamla/Motown and produced by Smokey Robinson. The album continued the extraordinary run of creative and commercial success that had made the Miracles one of Motown's most reliable hitmakers through the mid-1960s. The single 'The Love I Saw in You Was Just a Mirage,' co-written with Marv Tarplin, became another top-twenty pop hit demonstrating Robinson's continued mastery of the bittersweet, emotionally complex love song. The album also reflected the influence of the British Invasion on American soul production, with subtle psychedelic touches appearing in the arrangements.
