Flying High Together was produced by Johnny Bristol, Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder, and Ashford & Simpson, a notable collaboration spanning several key Motown creative voices. Two singles charted on the Hot 100: "I Can't Stand to See You Cry" (#45) and "We've Come Too Far to End It Now" (#46). This was the last Miracles studio album featuring Smokey Robinson as lead vocalist; following the supporting tour, Robinson stepped back from the group to focus on his Motown executive role.
Flying High Together is the fifteenth and final studio album by Smokey Robinson and The Miracles as a unit with Robinson, released in 1972 on Tamla Records. The album marks the close of a remarkable chapter in Motown history, Robinson had led the group since 1955, writing and producing virtually their entire catalog while simultaneously serving as one of Motown's most prolific in-house songwriters. 'We've Come Too Far to End It Now,' co-written with Al Cleveland, functions almost as a farewell statement, its message of perseverance carrying an autobiographical weight given Robinson's impending departure. With this album Robinson concluded a Miracles era that produced classic soul standards including 'The Tracks of My Tears,' 'Ooo Baby Baby,' and 'I Second That Emotion.' He would go on to Motown's vice presidency and a solo career that began immediately in 1973, but Flying High Together represents the end of his most prolific creative partnership.
