By the Numbers
Where There's Smoke... is the eighth solo studio album by Smokey Robinson, released in 1979 on Tamla Records. The album produced 'Cruisin',' one of Robinson's signature songs and arguably the defining Quiet Storm ballad of the era, a languid, sensuous slow burn co-written with longtime collaborator Marvin Tarplin that reached #4 on the pop charts and became one of the most-played songs on late-night urban radio. 'Let Me Be the Clock,' also written with Tarplin, provided a second charting single and further demonstrated the easy, unhurried intimacy that made Robinson the patron saint of the Quiet Storm format. The album revived Robinson's commercial profile at a point when many of his Motown contemporaries were struggling to stay relevant in the post-disco landscape. Where There's Smoke... confirmed that Robinson's gift for romantic songwriting had only deepened with age, delivering some of his most enduring solo work nearly twenty years into his career.
