Prince is the second studio album by Prince, released in October 1979 on Warner Bros. Records and produced entirely by Prince. The album marked a significant commercial breakthrough, reaching number four on the Billboard R&B chart and generating the top-ten pop hit 'I Wanna Be Your Lover,' which became Prince's first major crossover success. The record showcased his growing command of studio production techniques and his ability to blend funk grooves with pop melody and provocative sexuality. Prince's ability to craft both radio-friendly singles and more experimental album cuts was already apparent, setting a template he would pursue throughout his career. The album firmly established Prince as a major new voice in funk and R&B and set the stage for his rapid artistic escalation into the 1980s.
