The Love Symbol Album is the twelfth studio album by Prince, released in October 1992 on Paisley Park Records / Warner Bros. Records and produced by Prince. Released under the typographical Love Symbol, which Prince had adopted as his name in a dispute with Warner Bros. over creative control, the double album is a densely layered funk opera complete with an accompanying story about an Egyptian princess. Singles '7' and 'My Name Is Prince' became substantial hits, with '7' reaching the top ten on the Billboard Hot 100, while album tracks explored increasingly complex musical and narrative territory. The record was both a commercial success and an artistic statement about Prince's ownership of his identity and his music. The Love Symbol Album is a defining transition point in Prince's career, marking the beginning of his long battle for artistic independence from major labels.
