By the Numbers
Smash was written almost entirely by Dexter Holland, whose hooks on 'Come Out and Play (Keep 'Em Separated),' 'Self Esteem,' and 'Gotta Get Away' turned the band into a mainstream force. Thom Wilson produced for the third straight time, and the record became the best-selling album ever released on an independent label, Epitaph. Holland's blend of skate-punk aggression with radio-ready melody defined the album's breakout success.
Recorded in roughly two months at Track Record in North Hollywood at the start of 1994, Smash was assembled on the spot in the studio with no worked-out plan, and it was the last Offspring album Thom Wilson produced. Epitaph put it out that April and it climbed to number four on the Billboard 200 behind 'Come Out and Play,' 'Self Esteem' and 'Gotta Get Away.' It was the first Epitaph release to go gold and then platinum, and at more than 11 million copies worldwide it is still the best-selling album ever issued by an independent label. Together with Green Day's Dookie it pulled punk into the American mainstream, which is what brought the major labels calling; the band signed to Columbia in 1996.
