By the Numbers
Ignition is built almost entirely around Dexter Holland's songwriting, including the fan favorites 'Dirty Magic' and 'Kick Him When He's Down,' with Holland again the band's principal author. Thom Wilson returned to produce, refining the band's skate-punk attack ahead of their commercial breakthrough. The album showed the songwriting maturing toward the hooks that would soon make Smash a phenomenon.
Thom Wilson recorded the second album across June 1992 at Westbeach Recorders and Track Record in Hollywood, and Epitaph released it that September. It built the band a following around Southern California without breaking much past it, and did not go gold until January 1996, nearly two years after Smash had turned them into a national act. Dexter Holland wrote all twelve tracks except 'Session,' shared with Jill Eckhaus and Kristine Luna, and 'Nothing from Something,' shared with Marvin Fergusen. The band re-recorded its sixth song 'Dirty Magic' twenty years later for Days Go By, and played Ignition front to back at shows marking its twentieth anniversary in 2012.
