By the Numbers
Dexter Holland wrote every song on Days Go By, the band's first album recorded with producer Bob Rock, who handled both production and mixing. The record reworks two pieces of the band's own past: track nine is a re-recorded version of 'Dirty Magic' from 1992's Ignition, and the closing track's title nods to the 1964 film Dr. Strangelove. Holland's writing swings between earnest arena-rock on the title track and broad parody on 'Cruising California (Bumpin' in My Trunk),' which leans into pop and hip-hop production tropes.
Work started in 2009 for a 2010 release and kept slipping while the band toured, so Days Go By ended up taking three years and six studios, four in California, one in Hawaii and one in Canada, before Bob Rock finished it in March 2012. Columbia released it that June and then let the band go, ending a run of six albums together. It was the first Offspring record with drummer Pete Parada and the last with founding bassist Greg K., who was fired in 2018. Track nine is a re-recording of 'Dirty Magic' from Ignition, twenty years on. The album debuted at number 12 on the Billboard 200 on 24,000 copies in North America, and Dexter Holland wrote all of it.
