Dexter Holland wrote nearly all of Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace, the band's only album with producer Bob Rock. Rock, best known for his work with Metallica, brought a heavier, more layered production to the record after a five-year gap since Splinter. Holland's songwriting produced 'You're Gonna Go Far, Kid,' which became one of the band's biggest rock-radio hits and topped the alternative chart for eleven weeks.

Five years passed between Splinter and this one, the longest gap in the band's catalog at the time. They had been working on material since the fall of 2004 with nothing to show for it until November 2006, when they announced they were recording with producer Bob Rock. Writing and recording ran across three studios and finished in April 2008, with Columbia releasing it that June. Four singles came off it: 'Hammerhead,' 'You're Gonna Go Far, Kid,' 'Kristy, Are You Doing Okay?' and 'Half-Truism.' Dexter Holland wrote every track, and Rock stayed on as producer for the three albums that followed.
