Dexter Holland wrote nearly all of Conspiracy of One, the band's first album with producer Brendan O'Brien. O'Brien, known for his work with Pearl Jam and Rage Against the Machine, tightened the band's sound into a leaner 37-minute record. Holland's songwriting kept the mix of melodic punk and tongue-in-cheek singles, with 'Original Prankster' continuing the band's streak of hook-driven rock-radio hits.

The Offspring came out publicly in favor of peer-to-peer file sharing while making this one, and planned to put the whole album on their own website before it reached stores. Columbia threatened to sue, and it shipped as an ordinary record in November 2000. Brendan O'Brien produced it at NRG over the summer, taking over from Dave Jerden, and it turned out to be the last Offspring album with founding drummer Ron Welty, who was fired in 2003. It debuted at number nine on the Billboard 200 on 125,000 copies and went platinum. 'Original Prankster' features Redman and is built on a sample of 'Low Rider,' which is why seven members of War hold composer credits on the track.
