By the Numbers
Ixnay on the Hombre was again written almost entirely by Dexter Holland, including 'All I Want' and the ballad 'Gone Away,' as the band's primary songwriter. It was their first major-label album, released on Columbia, and the first not produced by Thom Wilson; Dave Jerden took over production duties. Holland's songwriting carried the band's punk identity into a bigger-budget studio setting while keeping the melodic edge of Smash.
The band's first record for Columbia, cut with Dave Jerden at Eldorado Recording in Hollywood over the second half of 1996 after Thom Wilson stepped away. The title runs Pig Latin into Spanish, 'ixnay' being 1940s Hollywood slang for 'nix,' to land on a blunt dismissal of authority. It debuted at number nine on the Billboard 200 in February 1997, went platinum in the US and sold past three million worldwide on 'All I Want,' 'Gone Away,' 'The Meaning of Life' and 'I Choose.' The one track Dexter Holland did not write outright is 'Intermission,' where he set his own words to a melody by Irving Caesar and Vincent Youmans.
