Green Day is an American punk rock band formed in 1987 in Rodeo, California. The core trio of Billie Joe Armstrong (vocals, guitar), Mike Dirnt (bass), and Tré Cool (drums, who joined in 1990) has remained intact for over three decades and is one of the best-selling music acts of all time with more than 75 million records sold. The band emerged from the East Bay punk scene, signed to the independent Lookout! Records for their first two albums, then broke through to mainstream stardom with Dookie (1994) on Reprise Records. American Idiot (2004) reinvented the band as a politically charged arena rock act and spawned a Tony Award-winning Broadway musical. Their catalog spans stripped-down three-chord punk, arena rock operas, and polished pop-punk anthems spanning nearly four decades.
