By the Numbers
Dexter Holland wrote nearly all of Splinter, a brisk 32-minute record and the band's second album with producer Brendan O'Brien. O'Brien also handled the mixing, keeping the songs tight and punchy. Holland's songwriting returned the band toward shorter, faster punk tracks, with 'Hit That' providing the album's biggest rock-radio single.
Ron Welty was fired three weeks before the sessions began, so Splinter is the first Offspring album made without the drummer who had played on every one of their records going back to the 1989 debut. Brendan O'Brien produced it between January and August 2003 at Henson in Hollywood, the band's own D-13 room in Huntington Beach and Southern Tracks in Atlanta, and Columbia released it that December. It opened at number 30 on the Billboard 200 on about 87,000 copies and went gold two months later, carried by 'Hit That' and '(Can't Get My) Head Around You.' Dexter Holland wrote all twelve tracks with no outside help at all.
