The Authorship Story

Data Insight

Deryck Whibley is on 90 of the 106 tracks here, and alone on 60 of them. The sixteen he is missing from are all on one album: Chuck, in 2004, is credited to Sum 41 as a group with no individual named anywhere. Everything either side of it names him. The other change over time is production: Whibley produces from Screaming Bloody Murder onward, so on the last four albums his name is in the writer column, the producer column and the engineer column at once.

Frequently Asked Questions Sum 41

Who writes Sum 41's songs?
Deryck Whibley. He is credited on 90 of the 106 tracks across the eight albums and is the only writer on 60 of them. The sixteen without his name are all on Chuck, where the liner notes credit the writing to Sum 41 as a group instead of to individuals.
How many albums did Sum 41 release?
Eight studio albums: All Killer No Filler in 2001, Does This Look Infected? in 2002, Chuck in 2004, Underclass Hero in 2007, Screaming Bloody Murder in 2011, 13 Voices in 2016, Order in Decline in 2019 and Heaven :x: Hell in 2024.
Who wrote "Fat Lip"?
Deryck Whibley with Steve Jocz, Dave Baksh and Jason McCaslin. It topped Billboard's Alternative Airplay chart and reached number 66 on the Hot 100, the band's only Hot 100 entry.
Why is Chuck credited to the whole band?
The album's booklet credits all thirteen tracks to Sum 41 rather than naming individuals, the only Sum 41 record written that way. It went on to win the Juno for Rock Album of the Year.
Did Deryck Whibley produce the albums?
From Screaming Bloody Murder in 2011 onward, yes. He produced, engineered and mixed much of the later material as well as writing it.
Why did Sum 41 break up?
The band announced their end in 2023, toured through 2024 and disbanded in March 2025 after a final worldwide tour, with Heaven :x: Hell as their last album.
Did Sum 41 win a Grammy?
No. They were nominated for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance for "Blood in My Eyes" and lost to Foo Fighters. They were nominated for seven Juno Awards and won twice, Group of the Year in 2003 and Rock Album of the Year for Chuck in 2005.
Why do the chart peaks here come from Billboard's alternative chart?
Only "Fat Lip" ever entered the Billboard Hot 100. The band charted consistently on Alternative Airplay instead, and the later albums are recorded here from Canada's rock chart, each named on the page.
Who else in the band wrote songs?
Steve Jocz shares credits across the first four albums, most often with Whibley, and Dave Baksh and Jason McCaslin appear on the early records. From Underclass Hero onward Whibley writes most of it alone.
What is on Heaven :x: Hell?
A double album, with a pop punk half and a metal half across twenty tracks, closing with a cover of the Rolling Stones' "Paint It Black".
