Data Insight

Invincible was the last album of new material Michael Jackson released in his lifetime. He wrote or co-wrote fourteen of its sixteen tracks, the highest self-authorship share of any of his Epic albums, working mainly with producer Rodney Jerkins. By this point his songwriting credit, not just his voice, carried the record.

Invincible is the tenth and final studio album by Michael Jackson, released in October 2001 on Epic Records and produced by Rodney Jerkins (who had worked with Destiny's Child and Jennifer Lopez), Dr. Freeze, R. Kelly, and Jackson himself, the most expensive album ever produced at the time of its completion, with a reported budget of $30 million, and the last new studio material Jackson would release. Jackson co-wrote most of the album's sixteen tracks, including 'You Rock My World,' 'Butterflies,' 'Speechless,' and 'Threatened', which features narration sampled from Rod Serling's The Twilight Zone, though the writing credits are distributed across a large number of collaborators, reflecting the different production partnerships used across the sessions. The album debuted at number one in 13 countries, including the Billboard 200, and sold approximately 13 million copies worldwide, a substantial commercial performance that was framed at the time as a disappointment relative to the standards of his previous work. The album was overshadowed by a publicized conflict between Jackson and Sony Music's Tommy Mottola, whom Jackson publicly accused of racism, and by the limited promotional support that followed that confrontation. Invincible is Jackson's final creative document: the work that closes a solo discography that began with Got to Be There nearly 30 years earlier and spans a range of commercial achievement and creative evolution unmatched in the pop era.
