Data Insight

Dangerous is the first Michael Jackson album made without Quincy Jones, built instead around Teddy Riley's new jack swing. Jackson wrote or co-wrote twelve of its fourteen tracks, his most hands-on songwriting role to date, and produced much of the record himself. It marks the point where his authorship caught up with his stardom.

Dangerous is the eighth solo studio album by Michael Jackson, released in November 1991 on Epic Records and the first Jackson album not produced by Quincy Jones, produced instead by Teddy Riley (who had developed the New Jack Swing sound that defined early 1990s R&B), Bill Bottrell, and Jackson himself. Jackson wrote or co-wrote eleven of the fourteen tracks, including 'Jam' (with Riley and others), 'Heal the World,' 'Black or White,' 'Remember the Time,' and 'In the Closet', the most expansive Jackson writing output across a single album. The production split between Riley's rhythm-forward New Jack Swing constructions (responsible for the album's danceable first half) and the more melodic, socially conscious material produced by Bottrell and Jackson (the second half) gives Dangerous a tonal breadth that no prior Jackson album had attempted. 'Black or White' debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, the first single since Paul McCartney's 'Pipes of Peace' (1983) to debut at number one, and the 11-minute music video directed by John Landis became the most-watched video premiere in television history. Dangerous spent four weeks at number one on the Billboard 200, sold over 32 million copies worldwide, and is the most creatively independent studio statement of Jackson's career.
