Data Insight

HIStory pairs a greatest-hits disc with a disc of new material, and it is the new disc that is scored here. Across those tracks Jackson wrote or co-wrote most of the songs, including Scream, They Don't Care About Us, and Earth Song, often turning to overtly political and personal themes. His authorship stays high even as the production splits among several collaborators.

HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I is the ninth studio album by Michael Jackson, released in June 1995 on Epic Records, a double album in which the first disc collects 15 greatest hits spanning his career from 'Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough' through 'Black or White,' and the second disc, HIStory Continues, contains 15 new studio tracks. The new material was produced by Jackson alongside Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, David Foster, Bruce Swedien, and others, with Jackson writing or co-writing the majority of the original content, including 'Scream' (a duet with Janet Jackson produced by Jam and Lewis), 'You Are Not Alone' (written and produced by R. Kelly), and 'They Don't Care About Us.' The album was released against a backdrop of prolonged media coverage and legal proceedings following allegations first made in 1993, and several tracks, particularly 'Tabloid Junkie,' 'Scream,' and 'They Don't Care About Us', directly address Jackson's perception of his treatment by the press and the justice system. 'You Are Not Alone' debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming the first single in chart history to debut at the top position; 'Scream' received five Grammy nominations including Record of the Year. HIStory has sold over 22 million copies worldwide, and its dual-disc structure, simultaneously retrospective and contemporary, represents the only formal catalog retrospective Jackson released during his lifetime.
