Data Insight

Bad is the high point of Jackson's songwriting within the Quincy Jones partnership: he wrote nine of its eleven tracks himself, including four of the album's five number-one singles. The only outside contributions are Man in the Mirror, written by Siedah Garrett and Glen Ballard, and Just Good Friends, written by Terry Britten and Graham Lyle. Where Thriller leaned heavily on Rod Temperton for its material, Bad moved the creative center firmly onto Jackson.

Bad is the seventh solo studio album by Michael Jackson, released in August 1987 on Epic Records and produced by Quincy Jones, the third and final collaboration between Jackson and Jones, and the album that faced the impossible commercial challenge of following Thriller, which it met by generating five consecutive number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100, a feat no album had previously achieved. Jackson wrote or co-wrote nine of the album's eleven tracks, including 'Bad,' 'The Way You Make Me Feel,' 'Man in the Mirror' (written by Glen Ballard and Siedah Garrett, the only top-five single not written by Jackson), 'Dirty Diana,' and 'Smooth Criminal', representing the most concentrated Jackson-as-songwriter output of his career. The album sold approximately 35 million copies worldwide, reached number one in 25 countries, and spawned a world tour that remains one of the highest-attended in concert history. Martin Scorsese directed the 'Bad' short film, and the 'Smooth Criminal' video, featuring the now-famous anti-gravity lean achieved through specially designed shoes patented by Jackson himself, became one of the most studied of his visual collaborations. Bad is the most fully realized expression of Jackson's own creative authorship within the Jones production framework, and its commercial performance, while inevitably measured against Thriller, stands independently as one of the most successful albums in pop history.
