By the Numbers
Music & Me arrived in 1973 with Michael Jackson still bound to Motown's writing system. He wanted to include his own compositions, but the label refused, so every track again came from outside writers such as Stevie Wonder and Michel Legrand. The album sold modestly and marked the limits of Jackson's creative control during his teenage Motown years.
Music and Me is the third solo studio album by Michael Jackson, released in April 1973 on Motown Records and produced primarily by Hal Davis, a more artistically considered release than its predecessors, with Jackson given slightly more latitude in song selection, though he continued to write no original material and the Motown professional-songwriter structure remained the dominant creative framework. The album is notable for containing 'With a Child's Heart,' a track that Jackson would later revisit and that represents the beginning of the more emotionally reflective ballad mode that would characterize his best work. Jackson's voice on the album is in transition, audibly moving through the upper register changes of early adolescence, and the production compensates by emphasizing orchestral depth and emotional weight over the uptempo energy of some earlier Motown work. The album performed more modestly than its predecessors on the charts, reflecting both the saturation of the simultaneous solo and group activity and the limited distinction in musical direction from the debut and Ben. Music and Me is primarily significant as a document of Jackson's transitional period rather than as a standalone commercial statement, and it would be two years before another solo album followed.
