Data Insight

Valió la Pena is an interpreter's record, not a songwriter's. Marc Anthony sings every track but wrote almost none of them: the songs come from outside writers, above all Estéfano, who wrote or co-wrote six of the eight titles, usually with Julio C. Reyes or José Luis Pagán. Anthony's own name appears as a writer only on the title track. The album is a salsa remake of his ballad album Amar Sin Mentiras, produced and arranged by Sergio George with Anthony co-producing, so the creative signature belongs to George's salsa charts and Estéfano's pen. Two tracks reach further out: 'Amigo' is a Roberto Carlos and Erasmo Carlos cover, and 'Lamento Borincano' is the Rafael Hernández standard.

Valió la Pena is a 2004 salsa album by Marc Anthony, released July 27, 2004 on Sony BMG Norte and reuniting him with producer Sergio George for the first time since 1995's Todo a Su Tiempo. Rather than a set of new songs, the record reworks material from his ballad album Amar Sin Mentiras into full salsa arrangements, so most tracks are interpretations of songs written by outside writers led by Estéfano. Anthony sings lead throughout, with Jennifer Lopez joining him for the duet 'Escapémonos.' The album topped the Billboard Top Latin Albums and Tropical Albums charts and was certified multi-platinum in the Latin field in the United States. At the 2005 Latin Grammy Awards it won Best Salsa Album, and the title track won Best Tropical Song; it was also nominated for the US Grammy Award for Best Salsa/Merengue Album but did not win. The closing 'Lamento Borincano' is a salsa reading of Rafael Hernández's Puerto Rican standard, and 'Amigo' is a cover of the Roberto Carlos song.
