Data Insight

Marc Anthony is the interpreter here, not the writer. The album is dominated by Panamanian songwriter Omar Alfanno, who wrote six of the nine tracks including the milestone single 'Y Hubo Alguien' and the title track 'Contra la Corriente.' The remaining songs come from other outside writers: Fernando Arias supplied 'No Me Conoces' and 'Suceden,' Manny Benito wrote 'Un Mal Sueño,' and 'Si Te Vas' is a cover of a Pedro Fernández song. Marc Anthony's credit on the record is as lead vocalist and co-producer with Angel "Cucco" Peña, so his name does not appear in the writing column on any track.

Contra la Corriente is the fourth studio album by Marc Anthony, released on October 21, 1997 on RMM Records and recorded at Altamar Music Studio in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Produced by Marc Anthony with Angel "Cucco" Peña, it is a salsa record built around outside songwriters, with Panamanian composer Omar Alfanno writing the majority of the tracks. The lead single 'Y Hubo Alguien' became the first single by a salsa artist to top the Billboard Hot Latin Tracks chart, and the album itself was the first salsa album to reach number one on Top Latin Albums and to appear on the Billboard 200. It won the Grammy Award for Best Tropical Latin Performance at the 41st Grammy Awards and earned Billboard Latin Music and Lo Nuestro honors. It was the last album Marc Anthony recorded for RMM before moving to Columbia Records, and it earned RIAA Gold certification in the United States.
