By the Numbers
Rock and Roll Over pulls the writing back in-house after Destroyer's collaborations, with Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley accounting for nearly every song. The main outside hand is Sean Delaney, who co-wrote three Stanley tracks, while Stan Penridge returns on Peter Criss's 'Baby Driver.' It is a return to the band's lean, self-written rock after a more elaborate album.
Rock and Roll Over is the fifth studio album by Kiss, released in November 1976, only months after Destroyer. Looking to recapture a rawer, more direct sound, the band recorded with producer Eddie Kramer, who had engineered the live album Alive!, in a converted theater. Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley again wrote most of the material, joined by collaborator Sean Delaney on several Stanley songs, while Peter Criss co-wrote and sang 'Baby Driver' and sang the hit ballad 'Hard Luck Woman.' A platinum seller built around 'Calling Dr. Love' and 'Hard Luck Woman,' it kept the band's mid-1970s momentum going.
