Lick It Up is built on a new writing partnership: guitarist Vinnie Vincent co-writes most of the album with Paul Stanley or Gene Simmons, his name appearing on nearly every track. Eric Carr even joins the writing on 'All Hell's Breakin' Loose.' Apart from two Simmons solo writes, this is a tightly co-written record, with Vincent's arrival reshaping who held the pen.
Lick It Up is the eleventh studio album by Kiss, released in September 1983 and a major turning point as the first album the band recorded and promoted without its trademark makeup, unveiling its faces on MTV. It was the first full studio album with guitarist Vinnie Vincent, who co-wrote most of the songs with Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons. Produced by Michael James Jackson with the two founders, the album leans into the harder, metal-edged sound of the era, led by the anthemic title track. A gold-selling comeback, it reestablished the band's commercial footing and launched its makeup-free phase.
