Creatures of the Night brings in a wave of outside co-writers as the band rebuilds its sound: Adam Mitchell works with Paul Stanley on three songs, Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance supply two for Gene Simmons, and new guitarist Vinnie Vincent co-writes three. The founders still front and steer everything, but this is one of the most collaboratively written albums of the band's catalog, reflecting a lineup in transition.
Creatures of the Night is the tenth studio album by Kiss, released in October 1982 and a deliberate return to heavy hard rock after the experimental concept album Music from 'The Elder.' It was the band's first album with drummer Eric Carr fully integrated and the last credited to Ace Frehley, who appears on the cover but does not play; a rotating cast of session guitarists, including Vinnie Vincent, handled the lead parts. Produced by Michael James Jackson with Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons, the album is built on thunderous drums and riff-driven songs like the title track, 'I Love It Loud,' and 'War Machine.' A commercial low point at the time, it has since been reappraised as one of the band's strongest albums.
