Underwater Sunshine (Or What We Did on Our Summer Vacation) is the sixth studio album by Counting Crows, released April 10, 2012 on Collective Sounds/ATO in the US and Cooking Vinyl in the UK. It is a covers album, the band's first release as an independent act after leaving Geffen Records in 2009, and every track is a reinterpretation of a song written by someone else. Adam Duritz picked songs from artists he loved and had played live over the years, from Big Star and Faces to newer songwriters like Kasey Anderson, Dawes, and Coby Brown, plus Bob Dylan and Gram Parsons. Two tracks, 'Mercy' and 'Four White Stallions,' come from Tender Mercies, the pre-Counting Crows band that featured Adam Duritz and Dave Bryson, and 'Jumping Jesus' comes from Sordid Humor, Dan Vickrey's band before he joined Counting Crows, so those three songs carry a direct line back to the members' own history even though they are still covers written by others. It reached number 11 on the Billboard 200 and number 23 on the UK Albums Chart. Deluxe and digital editions added two bonus covers, Madonna's 'Borderline' and Bob Dylan's 'Girl from the North Country.'
