Adam Duritz is the constant across every track on Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings, credited as writer or co-writer on all fourteen songs. The Saturday Nights side pulls in outside voices: Dan Vickrey co-writes 'Hanging Tree,' and 'Los Angeles' brings in Ryan Adams and Dave Gibbs of the Gigolo Aunts, the album's only writers from outside the band. The Sunday Mornings side is more inward-facing, built from co-writes with keyboardist Charlie Gillingham and guitarist David Immerglück on songs like 'Anyone but You' and 'Le Ballet d'Or,' reflecting the looser, band-written character of the acoustic sessions. Legal names diverge from performing names on several credits: Duritz appears as Adam Fredric Duritz, Vickrey as Daniel Vickrey, Gillingham as Charles Gillingham, and Ryan Adams as David Ryan Adams. 'Sundays' and 'Come Around' are the only Duritz solo-written tracks that also carry outside production hands, Dennis Herring and David Lowery on the former, Gil Norton crossing over to the Sunday Mornings side on the latter.

Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings is the fifth studio album by Counting Crows, released March 25, 2008 on Geffen Records. Adam Duritz built the record as a two-part concept: a loud, bitter Saturday Nights side produced by Gil Norton and a quieter, country-tinged Sunday Mornings side produced by Brian Deck. Duritz described the album as being about 'really wanting to mean something and failing to do it,' with the Saturday Nights half leaning into anger and the Sunday Mornings half working through failing and getting better. Recording ran from June 2006 to spring 2007, with additional production help from Steve Lillywhite on '1492' and Dennis Herring and David Lowery on 'Sundays.' Originally planned for a November 2007 release, the album was pushed back to March 2008 and debuted at number 3 on the Billboard 200, the band's best chart position since Recovering the Satellites. Its cover shows the Empire State Building, and the tracklist includes '1492,' 'You Can't Count on Me,' and 'Le Ballet d'Or.'
