Adam Duritz wrote every lyric on Recovering the Satellites, credited on the sleeve simply as 'Lyrics: Adam F. Duritz.' The music is a shared story: half the tracks are Duritz alone at the piano, but the other half were built with the band, from the full six-way writing credit on opener 'Catapult' to two-way splits with Charlie Gillingham on 'Angels of the Silences' and with Dan Vickrey on 'Miller's Angels' and closer 'Walkaways.' 'Daylight Fading' is the clearest three-way collaboration, credited to Duritz, Vickrey, and Gillingham together. The album's biggest hit, 'A Long December,' is a Duritz solo composition start to finish, lyrics and music both, making it the purest distillation of his songwriting on the record.

Recovering the Satellites is the second studio album by Counting Crows, released on October 15, 1996 through DGC/Geffen Records. Produced by Gil Norton and recorded across studios in Hollywood, San Francisco, and mixed in New York, it followed the multi-platinum success of August and Everything After with a heavier, more electric sound built around new full-time members Dan Vickrey and Ben Mize. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and went on to sell over two million copies in the US, earning a double-platinum RIAA certification. Singles 'Angels of the Silences,' 'A Long December,' and 'Daylight Fading' carried the record on rock and adult alternative radio, with 'A Long December' becoming one of the band's signature songs. Critics were split at the time, with some praising its denser, more challenging arrangements and others missing the immediacy of the debut, but the album has held up as a fan favorite and a turning point in the band's sound.
