Triumph was written and produced entirely by the Jacksons, with Michael Jackson dominating the creative duties following the success of his solo album Off the Wall. He handled most of the lead vocals and writing, co-writing the anthemic 'Can You Feel It' with Jackie Jackson and 'Lovely One' with Randy Jackson. The album was recorded across six Hollywood-area studios in 1980 and continued the self-authored, self-produced approach the brothers had established on Destiny.
Triumph is The Jacksons' fifth studio album overall, released September 26, 1980, entirely self-written and self-produced. It debuted at number ten on the Billboard 200 and became one of the best-selling albums of the year, with 'Lovely One,' 'Heartbreak Hotel' (later retitled 'This Place Hotel' to avoid confusion with Elvis Presley's classic), and 'Can You Feel It' as its standout tracks. 'Can You Feel It,' co-written by Michael Jackson and Jackie Jackson, was accompanied by one of the most ambitious music videos of its era, a cinematic, science-fiction-inflected short film that prefigured Michael's later work with John Landis. 'This Place Hotel,' a brooding, atmospheric track written solely by Michael Jackson, demonstrated his increasing sophistication and ambition as a solo compositional voice. The album was the group's commercial and artistic peak as a self-directed ensemble.
