By the Numbers
The writing sheet is far narrower than the guest list implies. Santos is the only credited writer on the tracks carrying Carlos Santana, Marc Anthony and Kevin Hart, so those guests perform without picking up an authorship credit. Odio breaks the pattern hardest, sharing its credit between Santos, Drake, Rico Love, Karen Rodriguez, Earl Hood, Eric Goudy II, Dwayne Nesmith and Noah Shebib, which is a Toronto and Miami writing room arriving on a bachata album. Animales is the other exception, built on a Don Corleon track with Sean Roberts and Nicki Minaj credited beside Santos.
The follow-up arrived a little over two years after the first Formula and widened the guest list rather than the sound. Kevin Hart opens the record talking, Carlos Santana plays over the cumbia of Necio, Drake takes a verse on Odio, Marc Anthony sings the salsa duet Yo También and Nicki Minaj raps on Animales. It debuted at five on the Billboard 200 with 85,000 copies sold in its first week, the fastest-selling Latin album in six years, and went to number one on Billboard Top Latin Albums, Tropical Albums and the Mexican albums chart.
