Data Insight

Utopía runs on a fixed writing team rather than a rotating one. Santos and Alexander "ChiChi" Caba are on almost every song, Joaquín Díaz joins from Payasos onward, and Phillip Jackson comes in only for Amor Enterrado and Años Luz. The guests are the point of the record and none of them write on it: the older bachateros are hired as voices and as players, with El Chaval de la Bachata, Joe Veras, Luis Vargas and Antony "El Mayimbe" Santos also taking the requinto on their own tracks. That split is unusual for a duets album, where a guest normally brings a co-write, and it is what keeps a record built out of other careers sounding like one writer wrote it.

Utopía is Romeo Santos's fourth solo album, released by Sony Latin on 5 April 2019, and it puts a guest from the older generation of Dominican bachata on every full song. El Chaval de la Bachata, Frank Reyes, Raulín Rodríguez, Elvis Martínez, Kiko Rodríguez, Teodoro Reyes, Joe Veras, Zacarías Ferreira, Luis Vargas and the duo Monchy & Alexandra each take a track, and the closer reunites Aventura for the first single the group had released in a decade. Santos produced the album himself and kept the arrangements to requinto, segunda, bass, bongo and güira. It opened at number one on Top Latin Albums and Tropical Albums and at number 18 on the Billboard 200.

Frequently Asked Questions Utopía

Who are the guests on Utopía?
El Chaval de la Bachata on Canalla, Frank Reyes on Payasos, Raulín Rodríguez on La Demanda, Elvis Martínez on Millonario, Kiko Rodríguez on El Beso Que No Le Di, Teodoro Reyes on Ileso, Joe Veras on Amor Enterrado, Zacarías Ferreira on Me Quedo, Luis Vargas on Los Últimos, Monchy & Alexandra on Años Luz, Antony "El Mayimbe" Santos on Bellas and Aventura on Inmortal.
Who produced Utopía?
Romeo Santos produced every track. Bellas is the one song he shares, with Antony "El Mayimbe" Santos, whose own record the song had first appeared on the year before. Mate Traxx and Gerry Grimaud Jr. recorded the album and Tom Brick mastered it.
What is the Utopía intro?
It is a reading of Dominicano Soy, the Fernando Villalona song, and it is the only track on the album Santos does not co-write. Genius lists the writers as Paco Cepero and Ignacio Román, and the Discogs pressing credits Villalona for the adaptation.
How did Utopía chart?
It debuted at number one on both Top Latin Albums and Tropical Albums, Santos's fifth consecutive number one on each, and at number 18 on the Billboard 200, on 24,000 units in its first week.
Data note: Per-track writers come from the Discogs Colombia pressing, which prints Words By and Music By line by line, and are checked against the Genius credits for each song; the producer credit on every track is Genius, and English Wikipedia independently names Santos and Alexander Caba as the writers of everything but the intro. Two ambiguities are worth stating. Track 12, Bellas, is led by a different and also famous Dominican bachata singer whose name is Antony "El Mayimbe" Santos; Discogs prints him as the featured performer and Romeo Santos as the writer, while Genius prints both men as writers and producers under the strings Romeo Santos and Anthony Santos. Because the string Anthony Santos is also Romeo Santos's legal name, only Romeo's composer credit is recorded on that track and the older singer is left in lyricists, where his stage name disambiguates him. The Wikipedia discography article notes the same confusion in Billboard's own chart data. The intro carries no composer entry because the writers Genius names, Paco Cepero and Ignacio Román, are not published in a legal-name form anywhere opened here.
