By the Numbers
Departure was the first Journey album produced by Geoff Workman and Kevin Elson, the team that would go on to helm Escape. It reached #8 on the Billboard 200, the band's highest-charting album to that point, and achieved RIAA 3× Platinum certification. Two singles charted on the Hot 100: "Any Way You Want It" at #23 and "Walks Like a Lady" at #32. The "live in studio" recording approach Workman and Elson used gave the album an edgier feel than Baker's layered Infinity and Evolution productions, and set the template for Escape.
Departure is the 1980 sixth studio album by Journey, a rock and hard rock record on Columbia Records that gave the band its first Billboard 200 top 10 placement at number 8. Producers Geoff Workman and Kevin Elson captured a live-in-studio approach at The Automatt in San Francisco, yielding an edgier sound from Steve Perry on lead vocals, Neal Schon on guitars, Gregg Rolie on keyboards and harmonica, Ross Valory on bass, and Steve Smith on drums. The single "Any Way You Want It" reached number 23 on the Billboard Hot 100, with "Walks Like a Lady" and the "Good Morning Girl"/"Stay Awhile" medley following. The album was certified 3x Platinum in the United States for three million shipments. Departure was Gregg Rolie's last full-time studio album with Journey before Jonathan Cain replaced him.
