Data Insight
Damita Jo finds Janet Jackson co-writing across the album with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis while widening her circle to include Kanye West, Dallas Austin, and Scott Storch. The writing stays in her name on all but two tracks: 'I Want You' and 'Thinkin' Bout My Ex' were written without her. The album's commercial struggle came largely from the fallout of her 2004 Super Bowl performance rather than any change in how it was made.
Damita Jo, released March 30, 2004, was overshadowed by the controversy surrounding Jackson's Super Bowl halftime performance earlier that year, which led to media and radio blacklisting that severely damaged the album's commercial prospects. The record is nonetheless one of her most sexually explicit and musically adventurous, with Jackson co-writing 20 of its 22 tracks, most of them with Jam and Lewis. It debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 but sold far below projections.
