Discipline is the one break in Janet Jackson's authorship. Her only songwriting credit is the interlude '4 Words,' written with Rodney Jerkins, and it is the only album from Control to Unbreakable made without Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. The writing and production came instead from an outside team led by executive producer Jermaine Dupri, along with Rodney Jerkins, Stargate, and co-producer Ne-Yo.
Discipline was Jackson's only album for Island Records, released in the United States on February 26, 2008, after her five-album Virgin deal ended. It chased contemporary urban radio more directly than any of her other albums, bringing in Jermaine Dupri, Rodney Jerkins, and Stargate in place of her longtime collaborators Jam and Lewis. Jackson's only writing credit on the album is the interlude '4 Words.' The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, making Jackson the first female artist to have had number-one albums in four consecutive decades.
