21st Century Breakdown is Green Day's second rock opera, produced by Butch Vig rather than longtime collaborator Rob Cavallo. The writing remains the band's own: Billie Joe Armstrong wrote the lyrics and the album's three-act narrative, with the music credited to Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool. It extends the long-form ambition of American Idiot without any outside songwriters.
Green Day's eighth studio album, released May 15, 2009. A second rock opera following characters Christian and Gloria through a divided America, it was produced by Butch Vig. Longer and more ambitious than American Idiot at 18 tracks, it won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Album in 2010. Armstrong wrote all lyrics; David Bowie receives an additional songwriter credit on '21 Guns' due to an interpolation of 'Rock and Roll Suicide'.
