By the Numbers
Insomniac is Green Day's darker, faster follow-up to Dookie, and like its predecessor it is written entirely by the band. Billie Joe Armstrong wrote the lyrics while the music is credited to Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool, and Rob Cavallo again co-produced. The record leans into abrasive, anxious punk without any outside writing input.
Green Day's fourth studio album, released October 10, 1995. A deliberately rawer and faster follow-up to Dookie, Insomniac traded pop accessibility for grinding guitar tones and aggression, addressing themes of alienation and anxiety. It sold over 2 million copies in the US despite a relatively short promotional campaign. 'Panic Song' is the one exception to Armstrong's sole lyricist status, it is co-credited to Armstrong and Mike Dirnt.
