By the Numbers
Dean Martin interprets every song on Everybody Loves Somebody rather than writing any of it; each track was placed with him by outside songwriters. The title single, cut on April 16, 1964, was written by Irving Taylor and Ken Lane back in 1947 and had circulated among other singers for years before Martin's version turned it into his signature song. Reprise built the LP as a fast compilation around that hit, folding in newly recorded songs from the same April session with older sides pulled from 1962 and 1963 recordings, including a Bobby Darin composition ('Things') and standards drawn from Brill Building and Nashville songwriters. The composer column uses each writer's legal name where it differs from the credited professional name, among them Bobby Darin (Walden Robert Cassotto), Doc Pomus (Jerome Solon Felder), Buddy Lester (William Goldberg), Scott Turner (Graham Morrison Turnbull), and Mitchell Parish (Michael Hyman Pashelinsky).
Everybody Loves Somebody is the 1964 Reprise Records album built around Dean Martin's version of the title song, a chart-topping single that knocked The Beatles' 'A Hard Day's Night' off the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 on August 15, 1964. Produced by Jimmy Bowen, the LP paired three newly cut tracks from the same April 16, 1964 session as the hit single with earlier recordings pulled from Martin's 1962 and 1963 sessions. The title track itself was written in 1947 by Irving Taylor and Ken Lane and had already circulated among other singers before Martin's version became a career-defining hit and the eventual theme song for his television variety show. The album reached number two on the Billboard Top LPs chart and was certified Gold by the RIAA. Alongside the hit single, the record includes interpretations of songs by Bobby Darin ('Things'), Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman ('Your Other Love'), and war hero turned songwriter Audie Murphy ('Shutters and Boards'). It is Dean Martin's most commercially successful and best-known album.
