By the Numbers
Every song on Swingin' Down Yonder came from Tin Pan Alley and early jazz songwriters decades before Dean Martin cut the album, and none of the twelve tracks carries his own writing credit. The oldest cut, 'Waiting for the Robert E. Lee,' dates to 1912 and was written by Lewis F. Muir and L. Wolfe Gilbert, while the newest, 'Just a Little Bit South of North Carolina,' was a 1941 Sunny Skylar co-write. In between sit standards by Hoagy Carmichael and Stuart Gorrell ('Georgia on My Mind'), Walter Donaldson and Gus Kahn ('Carolina in the Morning'), and Buddy DeSylva, Bud Green, and Ray Henderson ('Alabamy Bound'). Martin's role on the record is strictly as interpreter - he sings the melodies as written, backed by Dick Stabile's orchestra, without altering the credited authorship of a single track. The album's identity comes from its song selection and Martin's phrasing, not from anything he wrote.
Swingin' Down Yonder is Dean Martin's first full-length studio album for Capitol Records, released August 1, 1955. It was recorded across three sessions - September 30, 1954, October 7, 1954, and February 4, 1955 - at Capitol's Hollywood studio under producers Lee Gillette and Voyle Gilmore. Dick Stabile led the orchestra behind Martin's vocals, and the original liner notes describe every song as sharing a common geographical root in the American South. The twelve tracks are all pre-existing pop and jazz standards from the 1910s through the early 1940s, including 'Carolina Moon,' 'Georgia on My Mind,' and 'Basin Street Blues,' none of them written by Martin himself. Capitol assigned it catalog number T-576, and the label later reissued the record in 1963 under the title Southern Style. The 1991 CD reissue added eight bonus tracks that kept the same Dixieland mood.
